A common strategy to quit smoking is to use nicotine gum. It has a small success rate, according to my clients, but it can curb a craving during the quitting process.
A recent customer had a double hit issue. He smoked about 10 cigarettes a day and chewed gum about the same number of times a day.
In the first session he gave up cigarettes and wanted to type gum for the next week.
A week later, in our follow-up session, he noticed something very curious. He had also cut back on his nicotine gum and for the most part had replaced the gum with other things like nuts.
He realized that he wasn’t benefiting from the nicotine, he was addicted to chewing, which helped him keep his cravings in check.
I suggested that he swap all his gum for nuts, but he wanted to break the cycle entirely.
So the question is why chewing nuts can reduce your stress. It is because it created a habit and a powerful association. It’s a simple situation where when he does one thing something else happens.
Then he did it hundreds or even thousands of times. So, as you can imagine, it’s not easy to stop.
The solution was to replace the chewing habit with another habit that he enjoyed and that would not cause him to gain weight.
The solution came out of left field. I was talking about the feeling of breathing fresh air, and a John Denver song came to mind. But he went straight to the old Mac Davis song, “It’s Hard To Be Humble.”
This was perfect, he loved the song and could sing it out loud or in his head whenever the thought of smoking or any stressful feeling occurred to him.
Also, the line after it’s hard to be humble is “because I’m perfect in every way”. This was also perfect because I knew I couldn’t be perfect as a smoker.
All that was left was to start the conditioning process and associate the song with feeling calm and relaxed.
It’s as simple as thinking hard and feeling memories of being calm, feel it in your body and start singing the song. Then do it over and over again for a few days, and voila, you have a fun trigger that you can shoot to release your stress and anxiety.
