With all the recent controversy surrounding flu shots and flu medications, it’s no wonder many people are looking for natural ways to treat the flu. Bath bomb hydrotherapy provides a great way to treat flu symptoms without the use of potentially harmful medications.
What is hydrotherapy?
Simply put, hydrotherapy is a treatment that uses water. It can be hot or cold water in the form of baths, showers, saunas, steamers, water massages and many other forms. For our purposes here, hydrotherapy is in the form of a hot bath. Hydrotherapy can increase blood circulation, which in turn helps immune-boosting white blood cells circulate throughout the body. This will not only improve the immune system, but also boost energy levels and contribute to a general feeling of well-being. Hydrotherapy also helps relieve respiratory symptoms, such as nasal and chest congestion.
What are bath bombs?
A bath bomb (also known as a fizzy bath) is a bubbly tablet or ball used in the bath. The active ingredients, citric acid and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) create a chemical reaction in the water that causes carbon dioxide to be released, resulting in bubbles much like champagne. There are many optional ingredients that can be added, including salts, moisturizers, and essential oils.
How do bath bombs help hydrotherapy?
There are a few ways that bath bombs will help with the effectiveness of hydrotherapy. The keys are the ingredients used to make them and the essential oils used to scent them. When you make them for yourself or others, you can control exactly what’s in them and tailor them to suit your needs.
One of the key ingredients in making bath soda is baking soda. Its main purpose is to contribute to the chemical reaction in the bath that causes the bubbly effect, but I think the beauty of making bath bombs is the fact that baking soda has some really great health benefits too. Baking soda is very soothing to the skin and can be used to treat skin conditions like eczema. It is also known to aid in the drainage of the lymphatic system. This is a very important step to help fight the flu, as draining the lymphatic system will help remove toxins from your body, which in turn will help strengthen your immune system.
Epsom salts are not a required ingredient in making bath bombs, but they are one of many optional ingredients that can be added. When using bath sodas in combination with hydrotherapy to treat the flu, Epsom salts are a good addition because they are a great remedy for the sore muscles that so often accompany the flu. When added to bath bombs, they will also help flush toxins out of the body.
Essential oils are another optional ingredient that can be used to make bath bombs. Essential oils can be used to treat many health conditions, including colds and the flu. My favorite flu-fighting blend is equal parts tea tree, ginger, and lavender. Tea tree is an antiviral and will help relieve nasal and chest congestion. Ginger increases blood circulation, which helps raise body temperature to fight the virus. Lavender is a natural central nervous system sedative that will relax muscles and calm the mind, allowing for a better night’s sleep. Add this combination when making bath bombs and keep more on hand for family or friends who are sick.
This is my favorite recipe for making bath bombs to help fight the flu:
1 cup citric acid
¼ cup tapioca starch
¾ cup baking soda
¼ cup Epsom salts
2 tbsp. Shea butter, melted
10 drops each of tea tree, ginger, and lavender essential oils
Witch Hazel (in a spray bottle to mist dry mix as needed)
Sift the dry ingredients into a large glass bowl. Combine the shea butter and essential oils, drizzle over the dry mix, and mix with your hands. Spray with witch hazel as needed to hold the mixture together. Pack in molds, pressing firmly.
Allow to dry 24-48 hours before using.
