Shih Tzu dogs are energetic and playful pets that are often housemates. The dogs are small, but stocky and strong. Consider the following tips for living and enjoying a Shih Tzu.
1. Toilet
A Shih Tzu has two coats of hair, the undercoat shedding to the outer coat. The outer coat is almost non-shedding, so regular brushing produces almost no noticeable shedding, making the dogs recommended for people with allergies. The coat is long and if kept long for the show requires heavy maintenance. Many owners have very short coats, which makes it much easier to maintain. Longer hair also tends to get dry and tangled as it grows.
2. Nose
Shih Tzu noses are small and flat, so eating and drinking sometimes makes faces dirty and wet. Owners often wipe their faces with a towel after eating to remove food buildup. This is one area where a shorter haircut helps with maintenance. When drinking, dogs can choke, since the nose is very small and close to the mouth. Closely monitor the drinking.
Mucus from the eyes also tends to collect on the face. This should be cleaned frequently to avoid problems.
2. Temperature
Shih Tzu are sensitive to high temperatures. It is considered a cool weather dog and should be supervised as temperatures rise.
3. Shelf life
The expected lifespan of these dogs is 13 to 15 years. Common health problems include systemic hepatic port shunt, renal dysplasia, and hip dysplasia. They also suffer from various eye disorders. Some dogs are sensitive to red dye #40 and unexplained scratching may be a reason to switch pet foods.
4. Exercise
Shih Tzu dogs are normally inside dogs, but they need regular exercise. Sometimes behavior problems are simply the result of a lack of exercise and a lack of interaction with people. Daily exercise will solve many problems, including the tendency to gain weight over time.
5. Training
Basic training, including house training, will make your pet a more enjoyable member of your household. Shih Tzu can be housebroken using any of several methods. Many owners use the crate training method. This works well if you can closely supervise your pet.
With proper care, a Shih Tzu can be a valuable part of your life for many years.
