Runners are always watching what they eat and trying to find foods that are good for them, but also taste good. In my opinion, I’m not going to eat something I know is good for me if it tastes awful! And I don’t think I’m alone. Runners also like to snack. So we need a snack that is good for us, tastes good, and helps with muscle recovery.
Pistachios are the wonder snack that fits the runners criteria! Now, I’ve always loved pistachios: I can remember me and my dad eating them by the handful. But, I recently discovered how good they are for me as a runner.
When it comes to nutrition, pistachios are packed with seven essential nutrients that we all need. These are thiamine, vitamin B6, copper, manganese, potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium. They are a great source of fiber and contain antioxidants that are good for eye health. And, as a side note, there are only 3 calories in each!
Another great benefit of eating these wonderful little nuts is that they can help with cholesterol levels. Eating them can lower bad cholesterol while raising good cholesterol.
Now for the part where pistachios are good for runners. Pistachios are full of protein. Protein is what runners need to help build their muscles for long-distance running. Plus, they’re great for a post-run snack. Studies have been done showing that eating protein-rich foods (such as pistachios) after a long run or intense workout will help reduce muscle soreness and help rebuild muscle for faster recovery.
Eating pistachios is also great as they fill you up faster and help you feel full longer. That’s because of the high fiber content in them. So if you’re also trying to lose a pound or two, this will help. Also, buy pistachios that are still in the shell. Seeing the shells piled up will also psychologically prevent you from overeating them.
Like I said before, I love pistachios and have been eating (and enjoying) them for years. I am happy to know now that they are a great snack for me as a runner!
