I met Gary at his home in Key West, went fishing in his boat, rode in his pink Cadillac, and chatted with him about our mutual interest in cameras and photography. But what I remember most is how it changed the way I think about writing copy. Gary said that if someone heard or saw one of his ads, the worst they could say was that he thought you were very creative and that you were an excellent writer. The way they were supposed to react was to ask where they could buy the product you wrote about.
Another principle of Gary’s was that the best time to sell something to someone was right after they’d already bought something from you. This “up-sell” technique is now part of the standard business model for anyone doing internet marketing, but when Gary first told people about it, the concept was just beginning. He referred to it as his “rusty porcupine” theory, and sadly, the details of why he did it are best reserved for mature, spoiled adult audiences.
During his all-too-short career, Gary wrote many newspaper ads that ran in publications as varied as the Wall Street Journal and the National Enquirer, but the medium in which he excelled the most was the sales letter, in my opinion. Gary’s letters were printed on paper and delivered to their recipient in a real envelope with a real postage stamp. However, the principles of persuasive writing that he taught are just as effective in today’s world of online communication.
