So you found fleas on your little kitty, what should you do to get rid of them?
This will have a lot to do with the age of your kitty. It is not recommended to put any kind of chemical based products on kittens younger than six weeks. Fleas on young kittens are extremely dangerous and can possibly kill your kitten.
If your kitten is still nursing, you can be sure that the flea infestation is on the mother cat and not the kitten, so be sure to treat the mother first.
There are few ways to safely remove fleas without harming your kitty. You can bathe him in liquid detergent like Dawn with warm water, and then remove any remaining fleas with a comb. This kills fleas quickly and safely.
It may be easier to have 2 people do this, one to hold the kitten while the other massages and washes it. Be sure to wrap the kitten in a warm towel so it doesn’t get cold.
Once the bath is over and the kitten has warmed up, you will need to comb it with a special flea comb. A trick is also to put a small amount of Vaseline jelly on the comb; this will trap any remaining fleas.
These flea combs are inexpensive and work great for removing stray fleas. The best time to use the comb is when the kittens fur is still a little damp, fleas will find it difficult to move on the wet fur and it will be easier for you to catch the reamers.
Keep Vaseline Jelly nearby, so when you see a flea, just put some Vaseline on the flea so it can’t jump out and you can remove it.
Another idea is to have a cup of warm water nearby, when you find the flea and take it out, put it in the water, the fleas will drain away. For best results, put a small amount of dish soap in the water.
If these methods don’t work for your kitty, the next step is to call and talk to your vet for further suggestions and help.
Also remember that fleas and their eggs get everywhere, not just your kitty. You may also need to use special products to get rid of fleas in your home, such as sprays and bombs. Also note that these types of remedies can also affect other animals in your home, as well as small children, so read all the information before using them.
