In medical or pharmaceutical parlance, involuntary illnesses are known as iatrogenic illnesses.
These are diseases that are mainly due to adverse effects or complications of medical intervention.
According to medical reports, the United States may be experiencing as many as 100,000 deaths per year due directly or indirectly to unrecognized illnesses.
If we were to determine the statistics of emerging iatrogenic diseases that are registered in various clinics and hospitals in the states, we would be surprised to realize the magnitude of their occurrence. Extrapolating this data to cover the entire world would certainly send health care policymakers shuddering.
But I would not like to bore the reader of this article with any medical jargon that may make many laymen or dilettantes yawn at the very important information contained in this document.
Many human beings tend to worry about their health without any justifiable reason. That condition is what doctors call hypochondria.
Some time ago, my best friend and roommate, who was always very concerned about his health, went to a clinic as he usually does. He suffered from a common cold, his nostrils were clogged with mucus, and he was breathing heavily through his mouth.
Doctors patiently examined him and gave him a prescription containing five medications ranging from pain relievers to a drug that would free his clogged nasal passages. The combination of medications left him very sleepy and groggy. He had to keep vigil at his bedside for a day before he finally got better.
However, a week later, my friend and I also simultaneously developed a high fever that required admission and quarantine in a hospital ward.
Fifteen days later, we were cured of the rare infection that was diagnosed as being caused by a super weirdo that my friend caught from another patient when he had gone earlier to treat the common cold.
As if that wasn’t enough, my rather unlucky friend developed jaundice and it was discovered that he had developed unusual liver damage due to the cocktail of medications he had been taking since becoming ill with his initial ailment, the common cold!
Well, as you may have guessed, my friend is still taking some medication to get his poor liver back in order.
Does this timeline of events strike a chord in your perception of the dilemma humanity faces every time a sick person is sick and needs medical treatment?
If the story has stirred your psyche, let’s review the causes of involuntary illnesses:
* Drugs abuse
* Drug abuse, use of alcohol, narcotics or other narcotics
* Negligence or error of health professionals
* psychosis
* Normal adverse effect of medications
* Unusual drug side effects due to the genetic makeup of the patient
* Drug interaction with food or other medications taken by the patient
*Administration of contaminated or expired medications
* Misdiagnoses of disease by doctors or paramedics
* Inadvertent patient exposure to infectious germs
* Undetectable or underlying poor health of patients
*Presence of superbugs in public places
* Transfer of germs from autopsy room to maternity and operating room
*Extensive and intrusive surgery to various parts of the body
*Food contamination
*Exposure to excessive nuclear radiation or non-nuclear radiation
*Ingestion of poisonous medicinal substances
* Inadequate environmental sanitation in health facilities
* Inadequate gene therapy and plastic surgery
To minimize the occurrence of unnoticed diseases, we must, among other things,
* Clean or wash all frequently touched items with antiseptics
*Avoid drug abuse or misuse
*Ensure proper diagnosis of diseases.
*Avoid unnecessary self-medication
*Avoid the use of contaminated or expired medications
*Avoid unnecessary gene therapy or cosmetic surgery
*Physicians and pharmacists must work as a team to reduce drug interactions and minimize adverse effects
*All health professionals must work as a team to avoid the negligence or error of any individual.
*Patients should ensure they receive detailed information about the medications and foods to take when undergoing treatment for a particular disease.
*Proper and frequent laundering of hospital bedding and patient clothing.
*Improving personal hygiene for healthcare professionals, hospital visitors and patients
* Adequate environmental sanitation of health establishments.
*Keep medications locked away from children or neurotic patients
*Avoid excessive exposure of patients to nuclear or non-nuclear radiation
*Governments around the world must ensure that there is rigorous benchmarking of the performance of medical and pharmaceutical research so that the prevalence of inadvertent diseases that are linked to errors by health professionals is greatly reduced.
