When people think of the gym floor, they think of how unique, well choreographed, powerful, and graceful the routine is. They definitely don’t think about music, but they should. The music of the gymnastics floor routine plays an important and crucial role in the success of the floor exercise.
Gym floor music is exclusive; it’s made specifically with floor routines in mind. You can’t pick a random song you like and create a routine for it; music for gym floor has precise guidelines.
First, the music cannot contain any voice at all! If they do, you will receive a BIG deduction. I don’t care how great the words of the song are, don’t use them, it’s not worth lowering the score on your floor exercises. You’ll also want to make sure the gym floor music is 1 minute and 30 seconds long (90 seconds from start to finish). Make sure the floor routine music has a variety of beats and rhythms. It should contain parts that are fast acting and parts that are slower so you can catch your breath. Your gymnastics music should include three segments of music that stand out from the rest; this is where you should put your three flip passes. You should have your first stunt pass 10-20 seconds after the gymnastics music starts. This will start your routine off strong and set the tone for the rest. You’ll also want to put a flip pass into your floor routine at the end; this will be your big finally! The other flip pass can be inserted anywhere between the first and last.
If your floor routine music is set up using these guidelines, your routine and floor gymnastics music should fit perfectly!
