It’s a proven fact that throwing overhead in baseball, unlike in softball, is an unnatural motion that can lead to injury. How do we prevent these injuries?
There are many types of pitching related injuries, therefore there is no one answer to prevent them, but we can use proven methods that help prevent certain types of injuries.
One such standard method, used by major league pitchers, is to have their pitchers pitch on the “Before Day” and “After Day” of their turn in the rotation. That may surprise some coaches, as traditional wisdom advises against throwing before and after a throwing task, which increases fatigue and risk of injury.
Actually, the opposite is true. Here is the logic behind this training method.
The first problem is that we must reprogram our minds as there is a big difference between “Throw” and “Throw”. We will be talking about shooting only.
The day after a pitching assignment, the muscles are sore and stiff, which is the body’s natural response to extreme stress on the muscles, and while it may hurt at first, these muscles need to be exercised to speed up the recovery process.
1. Start by simply playing catch at short range without trying for speed, in fact throw the ball in an arc towards your target.
2. As the throwing muscles begin to loosen, increase the throwing distance, but not the speed, except as needed to throw the ball farther.

1. To improve arm health, the player should perform static stretching exercises the day after pitching, as this stretching will increase blood circulation to damaged body tissue and aid in the healing process.
2. Reduce DOMS or late-onset muscle soreness, which is a common problem where a pitcher feels fine the day after pitching, but becomes sore the second day after pitching.
The only way to prevent this is through strength and resistance training, which should be an ongoing process throughout the season anyway, but is a must for this problem. Your pitcher(s) must go through a full body workout, not requiring extreme weights or excessive exercise, the day “after” the pitch.
If your pitching staff is constantly complaining of pain, they need to get stronger or throw more, but chances are a combination is the best remedy.
We’ve discussed the day after routines, but what about the day before a release task?
(1.) The number one rule for pitchers pitching the day before is that all pitches are to be thrown on level ground. Never throw yourself off the pitching mound the day before! I can’t be clearer than that.
(2.) Casting sessions should not be done at 100% speed, 75 – 80% is more than adequate.
(3.) Not throwing from the regulation throwing distance. Instead of shooting from 60′ 6″ shoot from a distance of 45′.
The intent of these pitching sessions is to simulate real game conditions where you can practice the string and stretch positions, work on increasing control issues, or develop an off-speed pitch such as a change-up circle.
Break these sessions into segments of 10 to 15 pitches each, making sure the pitcher stops and rests between each segment.
