All right, let’s talk about CAR WASH.
Their big, industrial-type car washes are … well, they’re like an assembly line where they ship them through an automatic system, a pretty simple process …
Usually they’ll stop at a vacuum area to start, where how well you get the vacuum out of your car largely depends on what kind of minimum wage you have and what kind of mood you are in that day. Let’s tell the truth here. Sometimes you get a good deal. Other times, well, you’ve taken your car to these washes. You know what I’m talking about here.
Then they take them to the next stage where a team will spray them, and they could add any cleaner (that’s too HARD) to their rims or wheels … they usually have a really strong degreaser, or a really strong bug remover, something like that, and then they pressure wash the vehicle really fast and they just ship it out, where they usually put on a track system …
This system … is automatic. They’ll put your car in neutral, and the track system will grab you, take over … and start pulling your car through this long tunnel.
In the tunnel, it is sprayed with a lot of recycled water from all the other vehicles, all the pollutants, that have already passed through there, sometimes the brush hits them, sometimes they have no contact … either way it is the same . Either they are ruined or beaten up with a lot of these rubber felt things which are pretty rough as they come off that end. It’s better than keeping your car dirty all the time, sure … but it’s really not that good for the long-term health of your paint job.
So you go through the tunnel, where you practically get hit with these strips that are supposed to scrub you … which works by turning at high speeds, and basically hitting your car a lot as you go. So your car is essentially grabbed from the front, going through this tunnel where you get hit a bunch (probably wondering what he did that would piss him off so much that it would punish him this way. I mean, think about it … for you, you’re washing your car, trying to clean it, make it look nice. For your car, you are practically sending it there to be spanked, beaten, abused … it comes out a little brighter, which passes for clean, if you really don’t know CLEAN, but I imagine you will probably hurt her feelings quite a bit …)
Well, anyway, at the other end of the tunnel, usually there will be a guy who will jump into it, who will make a quick pass to your console, then you will have guys who will clean your interior windows pretty quickly, and the guy who jumps in the front driver’s seat, it’ll clean your dash, your front console, your window, that sort of thing …
Usually there are three or four types there. One guy gets the rear window from the driver, the other takes both on the other side, and they’ll dry the vehicle really fast when it comes out of the end of the tunnel and there’s also some air blowing in there that helps that process. out of. Front driver pulls it out, some guys come out, clean the door jambs, maybe finish drying it if need be.
In some of them, they can sell you a little more by adding seasoning to your tires, things like that.
And they could get it out of there and put in some wax, which is generally a BAD idea at this point for a number of reasons …
Is your car REALLY clean? Seriously? There are still a lot of contaminants in your paint if you haven’t treated it with a clay bar, and by waxing you are simply sealing them, making sure the sun actually uses them very well and does so in the long run. Damage to your paint.
And what kind of wax are they using? What’s in there What does? What does it mean? Some things to think about.
So it’s bad enough, with waxing, when it’s just a manual application (you know, spray on a little pad, run the pad over the car, wait a minute or two, then wipe it off if it comes off).
By the way, can you believe this goes through a “PREMIUM” treatment in most places? Another thing to think about. Once I know more about these things (and I’ll be posting quite a few articles on the different levels of service and their process, explaining a lot about waxes and paint correction, that kind of thing … so stay tuned). It should be enough to make you really squirm the next time you see a “Car Wash” place try to sell you a “Premium Detail Service” when you realize what you are really getting.
So what I just described is the process that you will come across in most of your commercial car washes. It’s bad enough, right? It gets worse …
Look, you REALLY get in trouble when someone puts a shock on you that they don’t know what they’re doing (and if they’re buffing or “buffing” their car, as they call it, without having done a clay bar treatment to remove the contaminants in the paint, I promise you they DON’T know what they’re doing) because what happens at this point is the machine takes all of these contaminants and spins them and grinds them into your paint. The polishing pad becomes the equivalent of sandpaper, and here you can really destroy a paint job. Of course, those kinds of things are done every day in many of these large industrial car washes.
And that’s it … that’s your standard car wash …
I mean, look, if you have an old car that’s not worth that much, just a whisk that you use to get around town, yeah, take it to a car wash. I’m not trying to quit. They do their thing and there is value in it for many people. It’s MUCH better than letting dirt and contaminants continue to build up and never washing them at all … that’s the WORST thing you can do. And that’s fine with a lot of people.
But what I’m doing here in this series of articles is going through the different levels of care and maintenance of your car, showing the difference between the levels that, of course, no one is going to tell you, if they KNOW why, well, no it’s so good for your business to admit a lot of these things to you.
But this series of articles is about … trying to educate you a little about all of this, showing the difference, so that when you make a decision about which level to choose for the long-term care and maintenance of your car, it is a decision. INFORMED … that you have the facts about what you are dealing with … how it fits.
So yeah, the car wash, which is basically what I would call “Level 1,” is fine for a lot of people. Not trying to leave them here. They remove dirt from cars, they can make them smell good for a while, that kind of thing. And they provide a lot of jobs for high school kids. There is. And I guess that’s good. Nothing against the car wash.
The car wash is great for a Kia … not so much for your Porsche, or Jag, or Bentley, or Rolls …
If you have a nicer car, something expensive, a classic or whatever, you really want to think long term care and understand the difference between different levels of service and how that works in the long term. term with preserving and enhancing your car’s value and beauty …
