Some people find using too much white in a room cold and unappealing. Interestingly, it can be a great option in a small area to create the illusion of space. It’s a common theme to want the feeling of cleanliness and order of ‘less is more’ in a home, but for some people the implementation of an all-white décor can seem daunting and almost clinical. Surely no one (whether they live with their family or in a dorm or shared house) wouldn’t want to surround themselves with clutter and a lot of unnecessary clutter, creating a seemingly claustrophobic space.
The use of white in the home is truly a blessing for those who live in smaller spaces. An easy and cost effective do-it-yourself tip is to apply a couple of coats of white paint to the walls, followed by applying some bright white paint to all installed woodwork: baseboards, railings, moldings, window frames and windowsills etc. This will instantly create a distinctive “lighting” effect in the room and will greatly open up any space you have to work with. The next step is to sort through the furniture and accessories you have to work with to put away and throw away to determine what you will need to replace. Some items to get rid of right away are: heavy, dark curtains and blinds, flimsy and impractical storage furniture, dark throw pillows and throws, anything upholstered in a dark fabric in general.
So what do you replace your discarded items with? Light and airy is a key theme to follow when choosing new furniture and accessories. It is recommended to use white or pale pastel shades in the fabrics you choose. As for the furniture (tables, side tables, chairs, etc.), it opts for light wood and pure white plastic and glass finishes. Accessories can be a bit bolder if you like: lamps, throws, cushions can all be used for an injection of color or texture, to enhance the warmth of the room. With the flooring (if you have the budget to change this), choose laminate woods or light-colored rugs. Forget heavy patterns or details on the floor space, this will simply frame the space. A simple rug with some textured detail can bring some warmth back into the room.
The general atmosphere of the room will be calm, serene and clean. You should take the opportunity to get rid of any accumulated objects so that the transformed room can start running completely clean! It should be noted that the use of a broad white in any room will not be ideal with children in the house. In this case, choose to redecorate a special space like the dining room that can be closed and saved for special occasions.
