There has been a lot of talk lately about living on a cruise ship full-time as an alternative to living in a retirement home.
However, it doesn’t look very exciting after about 6 months or so.
Ships, even cruise ships, are noisy for at least two reasons:
1. Engine noise.
No matter how new the boat is, no matter what new turbine engines the boat has, 24-hour engine noise can affect people.
2. Parties, bars and restaurants.
There’s always kind of a party atmosphere on a cruise ship, people eat and drink too much, no one tells them when to go to bed, they don’t have to get up the next morning, so parties make noise.
It gets boring looking at the ocean 2 days out of 3.
Although the ship’s activities are many these days, after a while you will get bored of them.
Cabins are generally very small, so after a while you will miss your big living room on dry land with its 75″ TV.
However, if 6 months is too much, there are other alternatives; I cruise maybe a couple of months a year.
If you follow that action, things get interesting.
Here are some options:
The $18,000 monthly route:
Residensea, the world’s only floating condominium, a 47,000-ton cruise ship that sails the oceans,
reportedly offering staterooms for rent for as little as $18,000 per month.
This cruise ship has designer apartments with original art.
I mean, this is luxury personified.
Great if you can get it.
Around the world in 102 days.
On a small luxury cruise ship
In 2005, you could take a 110-day round-the-world trip for as little as $15,600 per person.
That’s $150 per person per day including food and all facilities. That’s $9000 per couple per month.
This same couple would spend a minimum of $4,000 a month in a nursing home.
So going on this 3 1/2 month World Cruise would cost them $9,000 – $4,000 = $5,000 per month.
Now let me tell you what this $5000 for 2 people gets them:
Itinerary:
Southampton, Tenerife – Canary Islands San Vicente – Cape Verde Islands Fortaleza – Brazil Rio de Janeiro – Brazil Montevideo – Uruguay Buenos Aires – Argentina Puerto Madryn – Argentina Port Stanley – Falkland Islands Cape Horn Cruise Ushuaia – Argentina Transit Beagle Channel Punta Arenas – Chile Chacabuco – Chile Puerto Montt – Chile Santiago – Chile Easter Island Cruise Pitcairn Island Cruise Papeete – Tahiti Bora Bora – Society Islands Pago Pago – American Samoa Lautoka – Fiji Islands Noumea – New Caledonia Brisbane – Australia Sydney – Australia Eden – Australia Philip Island – Australia Melbourne – Australia Hobart – Australia Milford Sound Transit Dunedin – New Zealand Christchurch – New Zealand Marlborough Sound Transit Wellington – New Zealand Auckland – New Zealand Nuku ‘Alofa – Tonga Apia – Western Samoa Christmas Island Honolulu – Oahu, Hawaii Kahalui – Maui, Hawaii Los Angeles – USA Acapulco – Mexico Huatulco – Mexico Transit Canal d e Panama Curacao – Netherlands Antilles is Isla Margarita – Venezuela Barbados Ponta Delgada
The luxury:
This is on a very luxurious cruise ship that only has outside or balcony staterooms.
by freighter
In 2005, a 102-day round-the-world trip by various freight companies could be had for $11,750 per person.
That’s $117 per person per day including food and all facilities. That’s $7000 per couple per month.
This same couple would spend a minimum of $4,000 a month in a nursing home.
So going on this 3 1/2 month World Cruise would cost them $7,000 – $4,000 = $3,000 per month.
For this you get a double suite with double occupancy.
Port Times vary from 1 to 2 days.
The advantage seems to be that there is plenty of room in four double suites.
The double suites all consist of two rooms, a bedroom with two single beds and a living room.
The cabins have showers.
Each cabin also has its own VCR and TV monitor and refrigerator.
The facilities on board are a private lounge for passengers and the shared use of the officers’ table.
There is also an indoor pool.
cruise jump
This is even cheaper.
There are many 7 day cruises for around $100 per day per passenger.
So you could possibly cruise continuously for 7 days in the same area, say the Caribbean, on the same ship or on different ships until you tire of the area.
You can then do the same from the west coast.
The logistics would be more difficult because you may need a place to stay every 7 nights.
discount cruise
As of 2005, there is now a European discount cruise line operating in the Caribbean that charges $46 per person per night, but you have to get your own food.
The maximum time they allow you to browse is 2 weeks.
Still, it can’t get cheaper than this.
So if you want to live on a cruise ship, you can do it in different ways.
