Proper kitchen island design can make or break the look of a home, depending on how it’s situated, as well as its size and functionality. A box with a countertop is just that and it would be better if the owner buys a kitchen table and skips the idea. The right island should serve more than one purpose, look and fit within the overall design of the kitchen.
The first consideration is choosing the right size kitchen island for the area. There should be enough space around the outside of the island to allow for maneuverability throughout the kitchen. Too large an island will overwhelm the room and reduce the functionality of the entire kitchen. The island should be big enough to be useful, but small enough to avoid feeling like it’s getting in the way or causing traffic problems.
Match the island countertop to the existing kitchen countertop. This is not to say that it should be made of the same material as the counter, but it should at least accentuate it in color and style. Many people will choose to have the same material on both, which is usually quite easy to achieve using many of the countertop materials available today.
The base of the kitchen island design should include an area that provides storage. Any homeowner will tell you that there is never enough cabinet space in your kitchen. Bases include doors, drawers, or a combination of both and should be purchased with the homeowner’s additional storage needs in mind.
By accentuating the right kitchen island design with matching stools, it can serve as an eating or food preparation area. There are also designs available that incorporate another small sink in the kitchen. However, keep in mind that selecting another sink means that new plumbing will need to be installed. Available island designs and styles can be found online and by doing a quick search.
