If you’re a dog lover, and I’m assuming you are as you’ve chosen to read this article, the thought of leaving your “child” home alone, while your head is out in the open to explore, is painful.
The image of her head bowed as sadness fills her eyes or, worse yet, her nose pressed against a window or door, watching you pull out of the driveway, should be enough to melt the heart of any adventurer in the coldest of winters. .
So while you make your plans, choose your destination, and check out your gear for your next outdoor adventure, don’t let cold weather and snow stop you from bringing your best friend along.
Winter or summer, dogs can be a great addition to a solo hike or group outing. No matter what the activity, your dog just wants to be with you. However, it is your responsibility to make sure that it is not only fun, but also safe.
Tip #1: Know your Dog…
While every dog will want to walk out that door with you, not knowing where you’re going, you need to understand your dog to know if he’ll have fun and be safe.
The bodies of different breeds are regulated for different temperatures. In fact, we need to have the fireplace going and the dog door open to access the snow all at the same time, due to the different needs of our four-legged family members.
All dogs will enjoy being outdoors, even in the snow for a while, but once you decide what activity you are going to do, what the weather is like, and how long you plan to be outside, then you need to decide if it will be fun, comfortable, and safe for your dog. dog.
Another thing to keep in mind is your dog’s conditioning. If your dog has become sedentary during the early part of winter, be sure to start with some lighter activities or shorter walks.
Tip #2: Dress for Success…
After putting on your coat, gloves, and boots, don’t forget to consider the same for your dog. If your dog loves to be outside, but he has shorter fur and it gets a bit chilly, try a wool coat. Also, while dogs’ paws are worn and accustomed to many surfaces year-round, snow and ice can get stuck in their paws and cause pain, so look for booties.
Be prepared that your dog may not love wearing the coat or boots right away. They will fight with both, if they have never used them before. It will take some time to get used to them, but they will eventually love you for it.
If you’re going out at night, you’ll also want to consider some sort of light-up collar or tag to keep track of your dog. The reflection of moonlight off the snow can provide good visibility at times, but may disappear if you or the dog are up in the trees.
Tip #3 Keep those energy levels up…
While every activity starts out with a great deal of enthusiasm and energy, it can quickly wane. A dog’s body, just like ours, uses a lot of energy to stay warm. Add to this the effort of the activity and your companion will surely appreciate that you pack some snacks and water.
Don’t be fooled by watching your dog eat snow. While snow obviously hydrates, the meltwater that comes out of a puff of snow is much less than it appears. Your dog will still need the water you hopefully packed.
A convenient option to carry all this is to use a dog backpack. The pack must not exceed 25% of the dog’s body weight and must be evenly packed on both sides of the body.
Tip #4: Use extra caution at all times…
Once you’re outside, you’ll naturally want to allow your dog to roam free. This may be fine, since only you know your dog’s ability to stay close, not wander, and listen to commands.
Some things to think about before making that decision, even if “fido” is great off leash in the summer, are that cold and snow can decrease a dogs ability to find a scent and therefore increase the chance of getting lost if they wander. off. Plus, it’s hard to always know what’s under the snow, and if you’re in an area where there’s a risk of frozen ice, you don’t want your buddy going out on unsafe ice.
Tip #5: Pack it up
Lastly, remember that even in the winter, you should pack up everything that came and/or left during a fido potty break. So pack a lot of plastic bags in that doggy pack, and do the right thing for all nature lovers to follow, whether they’re two-legged or four-legged.
No matter what you choose to do this winter, there’s always the opportunity to bring your best friend. Follow the 5 tips above to make sure it’s a great outing for everyone.
