Yoga is a family of ancient spiritual practices originating in India. It is one of the six schools of Hindu philosophy. In India and around the world, yoga is seen as a means to both physical health and spiritual mastery. Outside of India, Yoga has been primarily associated with the practice of Hatha Yoga asanas or postures.
Like many things in life, yoga postures are cumulative. Beginner poses provide a foundation for later yoga poses. Although the only way to properly learn a pose is from an instructor, though some can be described as examples.
The foundation of all standing poses is “mountain pose,” which strengthens the thighs and improves posture. Stand with your big toes touching and evenly distribute your weight across your feet. Press your feet into the ground, while squeezing your thighs to lift them up. Pull your belly in, tuck your tailbone in, bring your shoulders over your pelvis, and widen your collarbones. You may want to practice against a wall to feel how the pose lines up.
The “Staff Pose” is the foundation of all seated poses and can be thought of as a seated version of the Mountain Pose. This pose strengthens the legs and improves body alignment. Sit with your legs straight in front of you, hook your thighs, and flex your feet (your heels may leave the floor). Extend your spine and place your shoulders over your hips. You may want to start while sitting on padding, and if your hamstrings are too tight, you’ll need to bend your knees a bit.

In addition to these two basic poses, a common intermediate pose to transfer to another pose is Downward Facing Dog. This pose strengthens and stretches the entire body, and is also used as a resting and standing pose. (It is a mild inversion, so it should be avoided during pregnancy or menstruation.) From a crawling position (wrists below shoulders and knees below hips), curl your toes under and push back as you lift your hips and strengthen your legs. Extend your fingers and press from your forearms toward the floor, rotating your upper arms out to widen your collarbones. Your shoulder blades should be facing down, and you should engage your quads to relieve pressure from your arms. Turn your thighs inward to keep your butt high and let your heels touch the ground; although if you are not yet flexible enough for your heels to touch the ground, do not step forward so that they do.
Most, if not all, yoga routines end with “Corpse Pose,” the traditional pose of rest and rejuvenation. With your eyes closed, lie on your back, with your feet and arms hanging on each side, slightly apart from your body, palms facing up. Relax your whole body, face included, and breathe naturally (you should feel heavy). As you come out of the pose, begin by deepening your breath. Move your outer limbs and draw the movement inward, bringing your knees to your chest and rolling. Sit up slowly before opening your eyes.
