The Society Islands in the South Pacific are a dream sailing destination. Charter in this area and you will feel as if you have arrived at the center of Polynesian culture; because it’s true: everyone wears a flower behind their ear, outrigger canoes are often seen, a long patterned cloth coat is acceptable for both men and women, and singing and playing the ukulele is a daily pastime. Top that off with the fresh fish salad made with coconut milk called Poisson Cru, and you’ll feel like you’ve landed in the heart of heaven.
Bora Bora, Raiatea, Tahaa and Huahine are part of the Windward Society Islands. To get to this area, fly into Papeete, Tahiti. From Papeete, there are constant domestic flights throughout the area, to start your idyllic crewed yacht charter. The cruise is between beautiful atolls, with spiky volcanic land masses piercing through the clouds, surrounded by crystal clear waters in lagoons teeming with coral and marine life.
Bora Bora
Mystical and mythical Bora Bora is famous for its spectacular scenery, romance, and a brilliant blue lagoon and reef that James Michener called the most beautiful in the world. The island is an extinct volcano that formed two imposing black peaks of land. Many visitors are drawn to the central lagoon, famous for being a great dive site with a variety of sharks, rays, and tropical fish. Those looking for long beaches will be pleased, as there are relatively few beaches on the main island; There are miles of sandy cays along the reef line, with secluded beach areas home only to sand crabs and palm trees that are ideal for picnicking and shelling in complete privacy. However, it is the stunning lagoon, a prized feature that draws visitors to swim, snorkel, dive, and windsurf. Surrounding the island with shallow waters, easily heated by the sun, this lagoon area is teeming with coral and marine life.
Other activities include a visit to the Tiki Village, where tourists can see traditional life in an authentically recreated village. Visitors will see the making of flower crowns called lei, as well as paraeo tattooing, carving and painting. The town also hosts a spectacular Polynesian dance and island party. For a once-in-a-lifetime thrill, watch sharks feed up close on the outer reef. Wearing a snorkel and fins, visitors enter the water as Tahitian divers hand-feed blacktip sharks. Helicopter tours are available to view the multi-hued lagoon and lushly forested interior, and this is a wonderful opportunity to get a close look at Mount Otemanu.
Visit the Bora Bora Lagoonarium where you’ll be given a mask and fins to swim in the shallows alongside a wide variety of tropical fish, rays and sand sharks. There are trained guides to help you with any questions and bread is available to feed the hungry underwater life that will swim alongside you for a meal.
On the coast there are several resorts that offer cocktails or meals and numerous spas for a relaxing treatment with local herbs and spices. In fact, Bora Bora probably has more resorts, all in a wide price range, than any other island. Many have an area of stores, which are also located along the road, a large number of which feature Black Pearls.
The famous Bloody Mary’s restaurant is located along the coast road, where you can dine sitting on coconut stumps placed on a sandy floor. Bloody Mary’s always features fresh local fish “fish of the day”and of course, their signature drink, The Bloody Mary.
Raiatea
Raiatea is known throughout the Society Islands as the “Sacred Island” and cultural heart of this group. Uturoa is the largest town in Raiatea and home to the daily market, which is very colorful and well worth a visit. This bustling market along the harbor starts at dawn with the day’s fresh fish, home-cooked meals, fruit, cakes and local crafts. Wednesdays and Fridays are the busiest, as this is when vendors from nearby Tahaa Island flock to the market to sell their wares. This is a good place to buy locally made vanilla, coconut and Tiare flower products.
Many believe that Raiatea was the cultural and religious center of the ancient Polynesian civilization. Known then as Havai’i, this island is believed to be where the Polynesians left to settle Hawaii, bearing the same name as ancient Raiatea. There are many archaeological remains that suggest that this island was the most important in ancient times, including one of the largest and best preserved ruins, the Taputapuetea Marea, an ancient religious center. Wander around the area yourself or take a guided tour for a full explanation of the culture and history.
Every October, Raiatea is part of a 3-day canoeing event called Hawaiki Nui Va, with over 100 outrigger canoe teams competing between Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa and Bora Bora. As you travel around the islands, you may see the locals practicing the new sport of outrigger canoe racing that has been resurrected since ancient times.
Taha
The real taste of Polynesia is truly found at Tahaa Reef. With no airport, this round island of fjord-like inlets is only accessible by boat. It is often called the Vanilla Island, as it produces 80 percent of all the vanilla in French Polynesia, and its sweet aroma perfumes the island breeze. The 42-mile coastal path winds through small towns and hills, providing sweeping views of jagged bays. Visitors enjoy the beautiful beaches, coral gardens and small desert sand motus.
Try to make time for a tour of a vanilla plantation to see how this rich spice is grown and harvested. Vanilla is derived from the bean pod grown from the vanilla orchid. To grow the bean pod, each orchid must be hand-pollinated; a laborious but very interesting process to create what is often called the “black gold” from the islands Many local products are made from the vanilla bean, so you can take home your own Black Gold.
Tahaa has the only navigable river in French Polynesia, the Faaroa River, which runs through a gorge on the island. River tours are available via motorized canoes to view natural wildlife, flora and fauna, along this river and in the interior of the island.
Open since 2002, Le Tahaa Resort and Spa strives to be the best resort in French Polynesia. Stop by for a cocktail, meal, or even a spa treatment. Either start or end or charter there with your private yacht charter.
A sea turtle reserve is located in the Tahaa Lagoon, where many species of sea turtles can be seen in their natural habitat. And as always, look out for the Black Pearl Farms that always welcome visitors.
Huahine
Picturesque Huahine has many titles: “the secret island”, “the rebel island” Y “the garden island” and each one tells visitors what they will find when they set foot in this wild and interesting gem known for its past, fierce warriors, and its current resistance to change and relaxing atmosphere. Huahine is off the tourist trail and still reflects traditional Polynesian life.
Essentially, Huahine is an ancient volcano whose sunken center was filled in by the sea. Like Tahiti, the island consists of two mountain masses: the great Huahine Nui and the small Huahini Iti. The bays of Maroe and Bourayne separate the two lands. The geographically diverse terrain includes long white-sand beaches, fruit and vegetable orchards, jagged bays, and lush tropical foliage that creates a jungle-like atmosphere. Huahine also features Maeva Marae, a well-preserved archaeological site at the foot of Mount Mouatapu and along the shores of Lake Fauna Nui. In the narrow areas of the lake you can see “V” Shaped stone fishing traps believed to have been made centuries ago, however locals still use them today to catch fresh fish for dinner.
Huahine has a main town, called Fare, with a grocery store, a main wharf, several shops, and restaurants. At night, open-air mobile restaurants magically appear on the pier with small kitchens and folding tables and chairs, each serving local food. If you happen to be near Fare on days when the local supply ship arrives, the harbor area will be abuzz with bustling and colorful activity.
A road circumnavigates both Huahine Nui and Huahine Iti. Although sometimes paved, sometimes dirt, the island is well worth the drive to see. Huahine is a very fertile island, perhaps because the name Huahine means “pregnant woman”, which refers to the shape of the island seen from afar. However, the fertility of the soil is most likely due to the volcanic origins of the island. Huahine is home to malanga, coffee, vanilla, and melon plantations. In fact, many of the cays along the surrounding barrier reef have watermelon and melon fields.
As you pass by the river, stop to see the sacred blue eels, part of Polynesian mythology. Found only in Tahiti and Huahine, the eels are 3 to 6 feet long and have cool translucent blue eyes. Swimming in a shallow area of the river, these eels are used to visitors and swim nearby in search of tasty morsels of food.
And as always, Huahine is home to a Black Pearl Farm, where visitors and shoppers are welcomed with tours and information on the Black Pearl farming process, and cases of loose Black Pearls and Black Pearl jewelry are sold.
After embarking in Bora Bora and sailing through Raiatea and Tahaa, and visiting Huahine, disembark in Huahine for a flight back to Papeete. Frequent round trip domestic flights are available from Huahine to Papeete, Tahiti for an international air flight home.
