Millions of Australians enjoy their backyard. It is the perfect space to live outdoors. You can hide from the sun in hot weather and still spend time outdoors. In spring and early fall, a patio provides protection from the rain, and if your patio roof is well insulated, it will feel nice and warm.
Many Australian backyards are open to the elements. In the Australian climate, this is not a bad thing. Having a patio that is open on three sides allows air to circulate, which cools things down on a hot day. It also allows you to relax while still keeping an eye on children and pets playing in the backyard.
In some cases, however, screens can be beneficial. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons why you should add screens to your patio or carport.
Privacy
The main reason people put up screens on their patios is that they want some privacy when spending time outdoors. This is understandable. Today’s urban areas are highly overcrowded and modern houses are being built on smaller and smaller plots. No matter how friendly our neighbors are, we don’t want to live in a fishbowl.
Aluminum or Colorbond screens will give you more privacy when you spend time outdoors. You can read a book in peace, away from praying eyes.
Security
Screens provide additional security, which is especially helpful if you have a carport. Adding screens and a gate will prevent unwanted visitors from entering your patio area or carport and taking a gas barbecue, tools, or even your car. If security is an issue, invest in steel screens as they are strong and sturdy. Don’t forget to add a lockable door as well.
While keeping people out is a good reason to install screens, don’t underestimate the value of keeping children and pets inside! Screens will protect young children if you want to keep them confined to a small area. The same applies to pets.
Decor
Decorative screens are a nice touch for a patio. Louver screens let in light and allow air to circulate, while offering a degree of privacy. They look especially attractive when used as a backdrop for climbing plants and flowers. Place decorative screens along one or two sides. Either way, it will be a good investment.
Additional weather protection
Do you live in a coastal place? Are strong winds a problem? Or is your patio in full sun most of the day? Screens offer additional protection from the weather. Let’s say, for example, that the wind usually blows from the west. A screen on this side of your patio will make sitting outside on a windy day that much more inviting. It will also keep dust and debris from flying all over your patio. Use a screen to block the wind and protect your outdoor kitchen on a windy day. Cooking in a strong wind is no fun, especially if you live near the beach!
